Soluble guanylyl cyclase

A very important version of the guanylyl cyclase enzyme is the soluble form, which is characterized by the presence of haem at the catalytic site. The haem prosthetic group is an iron-containing protoporphyrin IX, as it is in most cytochrome molecules in cells. It is the haem group within the enzyme that is the target of nitric oxide (NO), one of the main activators of the enzyme, as discussed in Chapter 10. In this signalling scheme, NO may emanate from another cell, cross the plasma membrane as it is non-charged, and activate soluble guanylyl cyclase with the concomitant rise in intracellular cGMP levels (Figure 7.9).
